Final Day at Olympic Trials

Kelly Stefanyshyn won the bronze medal in the 200 backstroke posting a time of 2:14.19.

Brian Johns won the 200 IM in a 2:01.31 to add another event to his schedule at the Olympic Games.

After six days the Olympic Trials produced some amazing results and some very exciting swimming.  The last night saw Canadian Records in the women’s 50 freestyle (Victoria Poon), men’s 1500 freestyle (Ryan Cochrane) and the men’s 4x100 medley relay.  Cochrane’s 1500 free was an amazing swim posting a time of 14:54.66 to shatter the Canadian record and ranking himself 5th in the world.

The UBC Dolphins placed five swimmers on the Canadian Olympic team for 2008.  Brent Hayden, Annamay Pierse, Tanya Hunks, Brent Hayden and Savannah King will travel with the team to China this summer. For Brian Johns this will be his third Olympic Games.

Donovan Tildesley was named to the 2008 Paralympic Team after another medal performance in the 50 freestyle tonight.  This will be Donovan’s third Paralympic Games.

Swimming Canada also named their Tri Nations Cup team that will race in Quebec City this summer versus Great Britain and France.  Blake Worsley, Matt Hawes, Jordan Hartney, Brittany Reimer, Martha McCabe and Hanna Pierse were all named to the team.

The team returns home tomorrow with those who qualified for the team coming home on Tuesday evening.

Pierse Shatters Canadian Record

Annamay Pierse won the 200 metre breaststroke in a new Canadian Record time of 2:24.65.  Pierse led from start to finish and shattered her old record by over a second to add the 200 to her schedule at the Olympic games.

Tanya Hunks won the 800 freestyle tonight again lowering her club record to a 8:33.61.  Hunks fought off an early challenge from several swimmers to win the event by over four seconds and will add this event to her schedule in Beijing.  Savannah King finished in third spot in 8:43.56 and claimed the bronze medal.

Matt Hawes swam in the A final of the 200 backstroke and finished in 7th position in 2:03.41.

Darryl Rudolf finished fourth in the men’s 100 butterfly in 53.94.  The event was won by London’s Joe Bartoch in a new Canadian Record time of 52.28 lowering the old record held by our very own Mike Mintenko at 52.44.

The competition will conclude tomorrow night when the 2008 Canadian Olympic Swimming Team will be presented.  The team will come together in Vancouver at the Mel Zajac Jr. International Swim Meet on May 22-25 weekend at the UBC Aquatic Centre and will remain in Vancouver for a training camp the week after.  The team will be presented on Wednesday May 28 at a special send off dinner at the Pan Pacific Hotel.  Full details will be made available to everyone soon.

Thanks again for all your support over this week long trials event.  The team returns home on Monday with those who have qualified for the Olympic team will be coming home on Tuesday after a day and a half orientation in Montreal.

Quiet Day 3 for Dolphins...Canadian Record Books take a Beating

A very exciting night on day number three saw three new Canadian records in the Women’s 200 Free, Men’s 200 Fly and Men’s 200 Breast.  The UBC Dolphins had a quiet night with only one swim in the A finals and no new qualifiers for the Olympic Team.

Scott Dickens, who just missed the spot in the 100 breaststroke, finished 5th in the men’s 200 breaststroke in 2:15.72 and did not qualify for the games.  Mike Brown, UCSC, broke the Canadian record in the event finishing in 2:11.01.

The night was started with a swim off for the Olympic spot in the men’s100 backstroke after the tie for the gold medal last night.  The atmosphere around the pool was electric as everyone knew that the winner would be going to the Olympics.  Jake Tapp from Langley won the event and earned himself a ticket to China over Rob Taylor from Ontario.

Up next was the women’s 200 freestyle and Julia Wilkinson broke her second Canadian record of the meet winning in a time of 1:58.73.  Four swimmers were selected for the 4x200 Freestyle relay with Wilkinson, Gnevieve Saumur, Stephanie Horner and Erica Morningstar making up our relay team for Beijing.  Adam Sioui broke the eight year old Canadian record in the men’s 200 butterfly clocking 1:57.98 to add this to his schedule at the Olympic Games.

Tomorrow’s events include the women’s 200 IM, men’s 100 Free, women’s 200 Fly and the heats of the women’s 800 freestyle.

Half way through the meet we have had five swimmers qualify for the 2008 Canadian Olympic Team, equaling our club’s total from 2004 (Brian Johns, Tanya Hunks, Savannah King, Brent Hayden and Annamay Pierse).  There are still lots of spots up for grabs as the meet continues till Sunday.

King, Pierse, Hayden Add their Names to Beijing Team

Three more UBC Dolphins have added their names to the Canadian team that will head to Beijing this summer after the second night of finals in Montreal.

Brent Hayden finished second in the men’s 200 freestyle to qualify for the individual event as well as a member of the 4x200 freestyle relay in Beijing.  Brian Johns, who was named to the team on Day 1, finished 5th and was selected as an alternate for the Relay team.  This will be Hayden’s second Olympic Games.

Annamay Pierse won the women’s 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:08.32 to earn her first Olympic Games team nomination.

In the final individual event of the night Savannah King came from behind to place second in the 400 Freestyle under the FINA ‘A’ standard and be placed on the Olympic Team.   King also broke the UBC Dolphin Senior Club Record in the process with a 4:10.28 under the old record of 4:10.85 held by Brittany Reimer.

Other Dolphins climbing the podium on Day 2 included Donovan Tildesley tied for the Silver medal in the men's SWAD 100 backstroke while Caitlin Meredith won the bronze in the Women’s 100 Backstroke.  Tanya Hunks added another medal to her collection with a bronze in the Women’s 400 Freestyle.

Coaches Message...

Dear Swimmers and Parents of Swimmers:

Welcome to the 2007-2008 swimming season and to the Olympic Year! What an exciting time for the Dolphins. Last year our Team swam incredibly fast. The Team won medals at all the major international meets and also won the AAA’s (Short Course), the CIS University Championships, and the Senior Nationals – what a year!

Our goal this year will be to improve upon our performances from last year. As a Team, we have to create an environment for success and share the Olympic experience with our top athletes.

How do we create the environment for success?

Respect every team member. Treat everyone, including yourself, with respect, dignity, and consideration. Respect everyone’s, including your own, right to pursue goals consistent with team purpose.

Accept that each Dolphin member is important. Everyone has the opportunity to participate and to make a contribution. Your acceptance and support of all team members is expected and greatly appreciated.

Acknowledge every team member. In our program, everyone counts. No one is invisible. Let everyone know that s/he is noticed and appreciated.

Value Swimming Excellence. We choose to hold fast swimming, good training and thorough preparation in extremely high regard. Welcome difficult, goal-oriented challenges. Seek out challenges that will help you swim faster and win.

Remember, we are all on the same team with the same goal: fast swimming in a fun environment.

If you are interested finding out how you can contribute to the team, or if you have any questions, or would just like to chat, please call me at 604-822-8903 or email ubcpdsa@interchange.ubc.ca. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
