Hartney Wins B Final in Thailand
BANGKOK, Thailand - Jordan Hartney knocked over five seconds off his personal best time to win the B final in the 200 backstroke on the opening night of finals at the 2007 Universiade.
"I'm really happy about my racing today," said Hartney. "My good friend Matt was going to swim the 200 back but now I'm really glad he didn't come. I knew I was working a lot on my backstroke but I didn't realize that it had come down this much. The work has paid off already and I'm pumped to swim my 400 IM."

A lot of personal bests and the relay team coming fourth when we were hoping to make top eight is a great start. It bodes well for the rest of the Universiade."

Brian Johns Named Flag Bearer for Team Canada
BANGKOK, Thailand - Two-time Olympic swimmer Brian Johns of Richmond, B.C. will carry the Canadian flag into Rajamangala National Stadium Wednesday night for the opening ceremony of the 2007 Summer Universiade.
Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) made the announcement at the Team Canada reception Monday evening with Chuck Andel, head of the Canadian Consulate in Thailand, presenting the flag to Johns. |

Canada opens the World University Games with a bang even before the opening ceremony gets underway. Men's soccer faces host Thailand at 11 a.m. local time on Aug. 7 (midnight EST) and the 35,000-seat Supashalasai Stadium in downtown Bangkok is expected to be rocking. Later on Aug. 7, women's soccer plays South Africa, women's basketball faces Turkey and men's basketball tips off with Thailand.
Johns, the 25-year-old UBC product, became Canada's most decorated university swimmer this past season, winning seven gold medals in as many races to close out his CIS career with 33 gold medals in 34 races. His other result was a silver behind Rick Say in the 200-metre freestyle, his first ever CIS race.
He leaves CIS swimming holding seven university records and is the only swimmer in CIS history to be named swimmer of the year three times (2002, 2003, 2006). In 2002, Johns received the Howard Mackie (now BLG) Award as CIS Male Athlete of the Year and he is a two-time Sport BC University Athlete of the Year (2002, 2006). He will be one of several medal contenders in the pool for Canada at the Universiade.
"Just to be considered as flag-bearer is flattering, so this is a very big honour," said Johns, who will swim the 200 individual medley, freestyle relays and either the 400 IM or 200 freestyle at the World University Games. "To be out there, representing Canada in that way, will be a really big moment for me."
Johns led UBC to five CIS championships with many records falling along the way, most notably the world record in the 400-metre individual medley at the 2003 CIS championship in Victoria, a mark that stood for more than two years.
Johns can also lay claim to 11 Canadian national and club records, most recently setting a new mark in the 200 IM at the 2007 FINA World Championships in Melbourne, a strong sign that he has fully recovered from the nagging shoulder problems that plagued him for much of 2004 and 2005.
His international career highlights include a silver medal in the 400 IM at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, as well as the 2002 world short course championships in Moscow.
More recently, he won silver with the 4x200 relay team at the 2006 Pan Pacific Championships, bronze in the 200 IM at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, and bronze in the 4x200 relay at the 2007 world championships.
"We are really proud to name Brian as our flag-bearer of the opening ceremony," said Chef de Mission Gilles Lepine from Université Laval. "He is a perfect example of someone who has combined excellence in sport and in school, and he is a proven champion. This is the image of Canadian sport culture that we want to convey: a great role model and inspiration for kids and a great ambassador for CIS and Canada."

| Thunderbirds Complete A Decade...
2007.02.24 Halifax, NS. The UBC Thunderbird swimming program completed 10 years of swimming excellence Sunday
evening by winning their 10th straight Women's and Men's Team Titles. The 'Birds never broke stride in what amounted to a total team
victory. The Women's team finished the meet ahead of the University of Calgary Dinos, 746 - 647, while the Men also finished on top
against Calgary, 787.5 - 613.5. The tenth straight title for both women and men continues to build on an unprecedented streak
that has never been accomplished in University sport.
Rookie Tara Ivanitz lead off the evening with a bronze in the 800 free, while teammates Brittany Cooper (JR) and Taryn
Lencoe (FR) finished 5th and 6th repsectively. Next up in the Men's 50 Breast, the 'Birds delivered a one-two punch with
Scott Dickens (JR) and Matt Huang (SR). For the Women's 50 Breast, Annamay Pierse (JR) took bronze and Haylee
Johnson (JR) was 4th. Another gold-silver finish in the men's 200 back with Matt Hawes (FR) edging Robert
Miller (SR), while teammates Callum Ng (JR) and Erich Schmitt (FR) added the point total with 5th and 7th repsectively.
The two highlights of the night came from Caitlin Meredith (SR) in the 200 Back and Michelle Landry (SR) in the
200 IM. Caitlin's 2:09.87 for the win marks her first sub-2:10 swim, just missing the CIS mark of her previous teammate
Kelly Stefanyshyn. Caitlin bounced right back with another personal best and pushing her teammate Michelle to a
personal best in the women's 200 IM. Lauren Kimak (JR) also swam a personal best in the final of the 200 back;
Hanna Pierse (FR) had a personal best in the 200 IM final and Carmen Block (SO) was also in the 200 IM final.
The third one-two finish for the men came in the 200 IM where Brian Johns (SR) finished ahead of Jordan
