Ottawa - Jun 16, 2006. Swimming Canada, in collaboration with PacificSport is excited to announce that the
University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver will be the setting for its Western base National Training Center.
“We are thrilled to announce that the National Training Center for Western Canada will be in Vancouver”
states Pierre Lafontaine, CEO of Swimming Canada. “The dynamic environment at UBC will not only facilitate
the process of building great athletes, but also great individuals.”
The Vancouver based National Training Center will offer swimmers the capability to train in an indoor 50 metre,
8 lanes pool as well as access to the outdoor pool which hosted the British Empire Games in 1954.
Canadian Athletes attending the National Training Center will also benefit from a variety of support services
such as sport science, medical support, access to one of the countries’ top Academic institution in addition to
on campus accommodations. University based athletes have the opportunity to compete within the Canadian Intra-University
Sports (CIS) circuit.
“By creating the “Canada First” campaign in partnership with the CIS, our goal is to attract and keep more Canadian
Athletes to our Canadian Universities” adds Lafontaine. “The National Center in Vancouver will facilitate the day to day
agenda for athletes who are also students at the University level, allowing them to reach their swimming and academic
goals. Furthermore, the center will be a great asset to our young up and comers and their personal coaches.”
Swimming Canada, the governing body for competitive Canadian swimming, will hire two high performance coaches that
will oversee the National Center Training Program in Vancouver. In addition to service the high performance athletes,
the other mandate for the National Training Center will be to offer services to clubs, coaches and athletes across the
country as part of a National outreach program.

2006.05.26 VANCOUVER – Canada’s best swimmers and several international stars will be on display at the UBC Aquatic Centre,
June 2-4, at the 43rd annual Mel Zajac Jr. International Swim Meet, the first of three stops on the newly formed Bell Grand Prix. Local
standout Brent Hayden, who dominated the headlines at last year’s meet by winning the 50, 100 and 200-metre freestyle events in record
time, leads a list of accomplished Canadian swimmers. The native of Mission, B.C., claimed a silver medal in the 50 freestyle at the recent
Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, and currently holds the Canadian record in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle.
Hayden was also a part of Canada’s silver-medal winning 4x200 freestyle relay team at the 2005 world championships,
and two other members of that relay – Olympians Rick Say and Andrew Hurd – are committed to the Zajac meet. Hurd
enjoyed individual success in Melbourne, too, bringing home silver in the 400 and 1,500-metre freestyle events, both in
Canadian-record time. Former world record holder and recent Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Brian Johns of Richmond, B.C., will also
be in the water, along with Canadian Olympians Scott Dickens, Kelly Stefanyshyn and Brittany Reimer, as well as Canada’s
100-metre freestyle record holder Erica Morningstar.
Other notable Canadian swimmers include: Maya Beaudry, Keith Beavers, Ryan Cochrane, Tanya Hunks, Erin Gammel, Lauren Van Oosten,
Matt Rose and Darryl Rudolf. Two-time Olympic gold medallist Megan Jendrick (nee Quann) leads an international field that represents eight countries.
Jendrick won gold in the 100 breaststroke and medley relay at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and was also the star
of the 2005 World University Games in Turkey, capturing three golds, two in Universiade-record time. She has held
a world record and 26 American records during her career. Her King Aquatic Club teammate Ariana Kukors, who
won three gold medals as a 16-year-old at the 2005 Zajac meet, was recently named to the U.S. national team and is
ranked top eight in the world in the 200 and 400-metre individual medley, while Carly Piper, a 2004 Olympic gold
medallist in the 4x200 freestyle relay and U.S. national champion in the 400 freestyle will also be in Vancouver.
University of Southern California All-American Tamas Kerekjarto (kerry-kee-arr-toe) has twice competed for his native
Hungary at the Olympics, while U.S. national champion Adam Mania was a member of the 2004 Polish Olympic team
and All-American Yi Ting Siow was an Olympian for Malaysia in both 2000 and 2004. Other countries represented
will be Brazil, Slovakia, Barbados and Kuwait.
At the Zajac meet alone, which is sponsored by the Mel Jr. & Marty Zajac Foundation, Speedo and Team Aquatic
Supplies, in addition to Bell Canada, $22,000 in prize money is up for grabs. This year’s Zajac meet is a build up to the
Pan Pacific Championships, which take place from Aug. 17-20 in Victoria and will bring together over 300 of the world’s
top swimmers from over 30 countries. Preliminary heats at the Zajac meet start at 9:30 a.m. with finals going at 5:30 p.m. all three days. Admission is free.
Swimming Canada will be hosting a Bell Grand Prix launch press conference on Thurs, June 1 at 10:00 a.m.

From the Athletes Rep...
It has been a great seven years that I have swum with the Dolphins program. I have decided to try something different for a change.
In the last few months, I have decided to move to Montreal in pursuit of my swimming and academic endeavors. I have been graced
with the support and knowledge of some of the greatest swimmers ever to come out of the Dolphins and I will always cherish the
moments that I have had with the people in and around the team.
First and foremost, I would like to thank my teammates for their continual support and memories that have been shared through
out my time here as a Dolphin. I would also like to thank the coaches for giving me the opportunity and seeing my potential as an
athlete as well as an individual. The parents, volunteers and support staff also deserve my most sincere appreciations; without all
these people, our program would not have the level of success that it has.
There comes a time in ones life when they must explore and see what else is out there. In recent light, I came to the realization
that I must broaden my horizons. I have lived in Vancouver all my life, and I believe it is time to leave home and my comfortable
surroundings to develop my personal growth. There is nothing more uplifting than going outside your comfort zone, we must never
stop learning, and learning about ourselves.
When I came to this team seven years ago, I was 14 years old. Coming from the Arbutus Club, I struggled for quite some time to
adapt to the new training. Everyone around me was at least five years older, and it was an eye opening experience. Through the
vigorous training, two years later I would go on to make the 2000 Olympic team. I have seen miracles, heartbreaks and success in
this program. I will always believe in this program, and I will never forget the experiences that I have had here.
I hope that my passionate vision for sports and leadership maintains its force even when I am absent. It is still my desire and
belief to collaborate the senior athletes with the younger swimmers to instill the values of leadership and development through sports.
This is not a good bye, I will be back in December after Commonwealth Trials, and I will always consider the UBC Dolphins as my home team.
Once again, I would like to thank everybody that has touched and shared the experiences with me in my time here as a Dolphin.
I will still be in and around the program, and to get in touch with me, I can be reached by e-mail: mhuang@telus.net.
Sincerely, Matthew Huang.
