Hayden completes hat trick at Mel Zajac swim meet - Day 3

VANCOUVER – Three days, three meet records for Brent Hayden of Mission, B.C.

The 21-year-old UBC Dolphins sprinter completed the hat trick on Sunday, highlighting the final day of competition at the 42nd Mel Zajac Jr. International swim meet with a win in the showcase 100-metre freestyle.

Hayden touched in 49.96 seconds, well off his Canadian record of 49.19, but good enough to break his own 2004 mark of 50.20. Friday, he broke the meet record in the 200 free, then Saturday eclipsed a 25-year-old mark in the 50 free, the longest-standing Zajac record at the time.

“I didn’t have very big expectations going into this meet,” said Hayden. “I had a really bad week of training, just swimming slow. So being able to come up and post all these times is really reassuring. And meet records are a real bonus on top of that.”

The Athens Olympian will race the 100 and 200 events at the World Aquatic Championships in Montreal, along with Salmon Arm, B.C., native Rick Say, who was second in the 100 free on Sunday.

Other world championship team winners on Sunday were Brittany Reimer of Surrey, who won the 800 freestyle, her third gold of the meet; Sophie Simard of Chicoutimi, Que., in the 100 freestyle; Audrey Lacroix of Montreal in the 200 butterfly; and Erin Gammel of Calgary in the 100 backstroke.

On the men’s side, Morgan Knabe of Calgary topped world championship-bound Scott Dickens of Ancaster, Ont., and Mike Brown of Perth, Ont., in the 50 breaststroke, while Riley Janes of Saskatoon won the 100 backstroke for his second gold medal of the meet. Pine Crest School’s Jan Wolfgarten claimed his second gold in the 1,500 freestyle.

The UBC Dolphins finished atop the podium in both medley relays and won the combined team standings with 1,590 points. Pine Crest School was second with 883.5, while the University of Calgary Swim Club finished third with 601.

Hayden’s time of 1:49.36 in Friday’s 200 free was the top male swim of the meet based on the FINA world points standard, while Reimer’s 1,500 free (16:39.49) was the top swim on the women’s side.

The 42nd Mel Zajac Jr. International swim meet featured 306 swimmers from around North America, including the entire 23-member Canadian national team heading to World Aquatic Championships in Montreal in July.

Canada’s national team will remain at UBC for a two-day training camp Monday and Tuesday before the majority of the swimmers head down to California for the Santa Clara International meet, June 23-26.

Hayden tops Bottom at Mel Zajac Jr. International - Day 2

VANCOUVER – For the second consecutive night Brent Hayden of Mission, B.C., broke a meet record at the 42nd Mel Zajac Jr. International at the UBC Aquatic Centre, this time eclipsing North Carolina swimmer Joe Bottom’s 1980 mark in the 50 freestyle.

Hayden touched in 22.96 seconds to beat out three other Olympians and shave nine hundredths off the old standard. Matt Rose of Lindsay, Ont., the Canadian record holder in the event, was second in 23.47, followed by Yannick Lupien of Ste. Foy, Que., in 23.83. It marked the third time in his career that Hayden had gone under 23 seconds in the 50 free.

“I don’t know if it says more about how I swam tonight or how [Joe] swam back then,” Hayden said of breaking the longest-standing meet record – one that was set before the 21-year-old was born. “I’ve been training really hard ever since world trials and this meet has just been a huge confidence boost so far.”

Friday night, Hayden won the 200 freestyle in meet record time.

Canadian record holder Brittany Reimer of Surrey collected her second gold in as many nights, taking home top honours in the 400 freestyle in 4:15.86, slightly ahead of world championship teammates Sophie Simard of Chicoutimi, Que., and Tanya Hunks of New Westminster.

Other Canadian record holders to top the podium on Day 2 were Mike Brown of Calgary in the 200 breaststroke, Toronto’s Andrew Hurd in the 400 freestyle, Mike Mintenko in the 100 butterfly and Riley Janes of Victoria in the 50 backstroke.

World championship bound Erin Gammel of Calgary out touched Canadian record holder Jennifer Carroll of Trois-Rivieres, Que, in the night’s opening event, the 50 backstroke, while Kathleen Stoody of Burnaby won the 200 breaststroke.

Sixteen-year-old Ariana Kukors of King Aquatic Club out of Seattle won her third gold of the meet, handily claiming the 200 individual medley in 2:17.24. Bradley Ally of Pine Crest School in Florida posted the high-points swim of the night by winning the 200 individual medley in 2:03.58, two seconds ahead of UBC Dolphin Brian Johns of Richmond, who is on the comeback trail from bad shoulders. Ally also took silver in the 200 breaststroke.

The UBC Dolphins claimed both 4x200 freestyle relays, the men’s team featuring Mark Johnston of St. Catharines, Ont., in his final race. The two-time Olympian and five-time CIS All-Canadian is retiring after the Zajac meet.

The UBC Dolphins lead the combined team standings with 1,115 points, followed by Pine Crest of Florida (598) and King Aquatic Club of Seattle, Wash. (421.5).

The Mel Zajac Jr. International Swim Meet, featuring the entire 23-member Canadian national team, continues through Sunday at the UBC Aquatic Centre. Preliminary heats start at 9:30 a.m. followed by finals at 5:30 p.m. There is no charge for admission.

Hayden tops Say on Day 1 of Mel Zajac; three meet records fall

VANCOUVER – UBC Dolphin Brent Hayden of Mission out dueled Canadian record holder Rick Say of Salmon Arm in the 200-metre freestyle to highlight the first night of action at the 42nd Mel Zajac Jr. International Swim Meet at the UBC Aquatic Centre Friday.

Hayden built a large early lead and held off his Island Swim Club rival in the final 50 metres, touching in one minute, 49.36 seconds to establish a meet record. Say was second in 1:50.35.

The victory for Hayden was his second straight (and second ever) over Say in the 200 free, but he was keeping things in perspective. “I’m not going to let it get to my head,” said Hayden, who along with Say will represent Canada in the 100 and 200 freestyle events at the World Aquatic Championships in Montreal this July. “It’s a really good competitive atmosphere right now and I’m just in there giving it what I have. To be able to put in a race like that at this point in my training is very encouraging.”

One of Hayden’s teammates, Mark Johnston of St. Catherines, Ont., who is retiring after the Zajac meet, held the previous mark of 1:49.77. He was fourth.

Two other meet marks were set on Friday. Canadian record holder Brittany Reimer of the Surrey Knights won the 1500 freestyle in 16:39.48, smashing Arizona swimmer Rory Schmidt’s 2003 time of 16:57.20, while Jan Wolfgarten of Pine Crest School in Florida won the night’s opening race, the 800 freestyle, in 8:10.70. The old mark was 8:13.44 set in 2003 by Larsen Jensen of Mission Viejo. Wolfgarten also won bronze in the 400 individual medley.

Ariana Kukors of King County Aquatic Club was the multiple medal winner on the women’s side, claiming gold in the 200 backstroke and the 400 individual medley.

The UBC Dolphins lead the combined team standings with 538.5 points, followed by Pine Crest School of Florida at 322 and the University of Calgary Swim Club at 223.

The Mel Zajac Jr. International Swim Meet, featuring the 23-member Canadian national team, continues through Sunday at the UBC Aquatic Centre. Preliminary heats start at 9:30 a.m. followed by finals at 5:30 p.m. There is no charge for admission.

When it was all over, the women T'Birds pumelled the Clansmen 153-43, while the men defeated them 123-81. Apparently, we ended the women Clansmen's six year undefeated dual meet record. Leading the way and setting UBC-SFU dualmeet records were Hayley Doody (200 free), Caitlin Meredith (100 back), Haylee Johnson (100 breast), Malcolm Lavoie (800 free), Callum Ng (100 back) and Matt Huang (100 breast). UBC also won 3 of 4 relays, setting new meet records in all three.
