Mies Schootman Service...
A celebration of Mies Schootman's life will be held on Saturday, July 17th 2004 at 2:30 pm, at
St David's United Church (1525 Taylor Way, West Vancouver, BC).
Mies Schootman (May 29, 1920 - June 28, 2004):
On June 28th, 2004, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away
peacefully at home in West Vancouver, BC due to cancer. Born in The Hague, Netherlands, on May
29th, 1920, Mies is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Teddy, her husband of 57 years.
She is dearly loved and missed by her 3 children, daughter Anneke of Sechelt, son Roel (Mary Lou)
of Tsawwassen, and daughter Joke (Mark Schubert) of Surfside, California, and her cherished
grandchildren, Cara (Nick), Jodi (Wayde), Mark, Todd, Tatum (Jason) and Leigh, great granddaughter,
Morgan, and sister Tineke (Arne Jahren) and families in Norway.
Mies will be dearly missed and
forever remembered by the Canadian Dolphin Swim Club where she worked passionately in many roles
for over 40 years, as a volunteer, chaperone, team manager and official for 3 Olympic Games, 2 Pan
American Games, the World Aquatic Championships and many more swim meets at the national and
international level. In 2002, she was inducted into the BC Swimming Sports Hall of Fame, and was
a nominee for the YWCA Women of Distinction Awards in 1993 in Vancouver. Mies will always be
remembered for her boundless energy, her zest for life, her joyous spirit and sense of fun by all
her family and friends and those she met. Her love of cooking a special Dutch breakfast of pancakes
(poffertjes) for her 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild was a royal treat for all, and brought
her much joy. Her devotion to and love of family, nature and the outdoors, and her daily walks
with Ted and family at Ambleside Beach will be cherished memories and in our hearts forever ...
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the "Mies Schootman Canadian Dolphin Scholarship
Fund" for deserving national Canadian Dolphin Swimmers (cheques payable to "Swim BC"), the BC Cancer

Swimming Canada to host the 2006 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Vancouver
2004.04.08 Vancouver, BC. Swimming Canada is pleased to announce that the 2006 Pan Pacific Championships will be held
at the University of British Columbia, August 17-20, 2006. The University of British Columbia is constructing a world class facility
that will act as the competition pool for the Pan Pacific Championships. This outdoor pool will be a ten lane (25 meter wide),
fifty meter facility, with a minimum of three meters in depth. There are several advantages to hosting this prestigious meet in
Vancouver’, states Swimming Canada President Rob Colburn. “The city presents an excellent gateway to Canada for our
international competitors, but most importantly the new facility will provide a long legacy for future world-class competitions.’
The Pan Pacific Championships is the most significant swimming-only competition in the world. Participating nations include
Canada, the United States, Australia and Japan, in addition to several other non-European countries such as China, New Zealand and Brazil.
“The University of British Columbia is extremely pleased to be named the site for the 2006 Pan Pacific Championships,” says UBC
Vice President-Students Brian Sullivan. “World-class swimming has long been a part of UBC’s identity at the varsity and club level,
so this event is a great fit for us. We look forward to the lasting impact the Championships and facility will have on our campus and
the greater community." Hosting the Pan Pacific Championships in Vancouver presents a unique opportunity for Canadians to see
our nation’s top performers in competition with the world’s great swimming superstars, notably Australia’s Ian Thorpe and the
USA’s Michael Phelps, for two consecutive years. In July 2005, Canada will be hosting the FINA World Aquatic Championships in Montreal.
