The Mix for Six is Complete...

2003.02.23 Victoria, BC. The UBC Thunderbird are once again CIS Champions, completing their drive for their sixth straight women's and men's titles. One world, one Canadian, and five CIS records were set by the T-Birds this past weekend in an awesome display of high performance. UBC finished up on day three of the championships with a gold and bronze finish by Brian Johns and Roland Bauhart in the men's 200 Back, a gold and silver finish by Brent Hayden and Mark Johnston in the men's 100 free, Brian Johns gold and new Canadian Record in the men's 200 IM (1:56.23), and Mark Johnston's win in the men's 1500 free. Roland Bauhart, Matthew Huang, Brian Johns and Brent Hayden finished out the meet with a new CIS record in the men's 4x100 medley relay. The women, gave a complete team effort, each being able to move up in the finals to earn enough valuable points to win the team title. The Thunderbird women defeat the University of Calgary 666.5 - 616.5, a substantial margin over the slight lead they had going into day 3. The Thunderbird men also defeat the University of Calgary 618.5 - 428. With their sixth straight win, the women need one more to equal the all time consecutive wins in CIS history by the 1986-1993 University of Toronto teams. The men's sixth title equals that of the 1965 - 1971 University of Toronto teams. No school has ever won as many consecutive titles at the same time as UBC has just completed. Way to go 'Birds! For complete results, see our CIS Meet Page page.

Thunderbirds Finding A Way...

W

As in WORLD RECORD...

2003.02.21 Victoria, BC. Congratulations to Brian Johns of the UBC Dolphins & Thunderbird as he set a new world record in the men's 400 individual medley. Brian's 4:02.72 shattered the old mark of Australia's Matthew Dunn at 4:04.24 from 1998. Brian's spectacular swim was ahead of the old record pace the whole way and he said it was the noise from the crowd that really made the difference after the 200 metre mark. The T-Birds also had win's from Mark Johnston in the men's 200 free and Kelly Stefanyshyn in the women's 100 fly. The Thunderbird capped off a rather exciting evening by setting CIS records in both the women's and men's 4x100 free relays. Kelly Stefanyshyn, Caitlin Meredith, Liz Collings and Jessica Deglau broke the old record held by the 2002 T-Birds by swimming a 3:44.01. Brent Hayden, Mark Johnston, Justin Tisdall and Brian Johns followed, also breaking the 2002 UBC mark, finishing in 3:17.53. UBC is winning both women (214-191) and men (173-159) over the University of Calgary following day 1. For complete results, see Swim Direct.
